Makeup Novice?
Are you a beginner to make-up and want directions on what you should invest your hard earned money? My beauties, read on because within the next few minutes you will leave feeling confident and educated. This is entirely my opinion so please do not feel like you have to buy every item, customize it to your needs. (FYI: I am writing this in the order that I would apply my makeup).
Let's start, shall we?
PRIMERFind a good primer that is suitable for your skin type. For instance, I have dry skin so the primer I have been using is Laura Mercier Hydrating Primer. It is water-based so your skin soaks it up and nourishes your dry skin, instead of having the product sit on top like a silicon based primer. Your face is your canvas and in order to paint a beautiful picture, you must prime your face. There are so many primers out there that targets your specific skin needs.
FOUNDATIONIf you are one of those individuals that can't justify in splurging on make-up or skin care products, please I beg of you, please do splurge on a good foundation. I can't stress this enough. You owe it to yourself to have a foundation that will sit on that face all day without caking, sliding, clinging on to dry skin, setting into fine lines, etc. Don't get me wrong, there are many expensive (high end) foundations that also have those drawbacks, and one can argue there are many drug store foundations that are pretty amazing as well. However, I am a strong advocate in finding your perfect shade and a foundation that will stay on your beautiful face all day! My current holy grail foundation is BECCA Ultimate Coverage 24-Hour Foundation. This foundation has been a savior for my blemished skin. It is suitable for all skin types, easy to blend, full coverage without feeling heavy (it seriously feel like your own skin), and leaves your skin looking youthful (satin finish but you can mattify it with setting powder). I can go on and on about this but I will let the product speak for itself.
EYEBROWS
Seriously! What was life like before the "eyebrows on fleek" phenomenon? I look at my pictures from 2014 (that was only 4 years ago) and I'm thinking where the heck are my brows at? Like who stole it? Anyways, your brows have to be "on fleek" because it is everything! It frames your face, and depending on how thick or archy it is will make you look cuter or sexier. As a beginner I would highly suggest using Anastasia Beverly Hills (ABH) brow wiz pencil (if you are dry skin) or ABH brow powder (for oily skin) because it is very forgiving. These two products are easy to use. As you become more confident you can level it up to the ABH dip-brow pomade. You will like this product if you prefer the clean and bold looking brows. If you like the natural brows, I would say stick to brow pencils and powders.
EYESHADOW
I know as a beginner eyeshadows are so scary to use because you don't want to end up looking like someone punched you in the eyes right? Seriously, don't be scared of eyeshadows, they are the most amazing thing you can do for your eyes. As a beginner I would say invest in a eyeshadow palette that has a lot of neutrals, browns, and some shimmer (because you dem eyes to pop). You can start off with one color (preferably a taupe, mauve, or a neutral color) all over the eyelids and add the shimmer in the corner of your eyes. If you are feeling brave, starting from the inner corner of your eyes, sweep the shimmery shade inward about 1/3 of your eyelids. The neutral eyeshadows will give your eyes dimension while the shimmer gives your eyes a pop!
These are a few of my favorite makeup palettes: if you are willing to splurge, I would highly recommend the Urban Decay Naked 1, and it is on sale now too for only $27. There are a lot of neutral colors so you can play it safe. That was one of my very first high end purchases. If you want something that is more affordable, Morphe 9B Bronzed Babe has very pretty neutral colors and pigmented with no fallout. The Morphe line in general is very affordable and their makeup brushes are comparable to Sigma brushes.
CONTOUR & BLUSH
Contouring can do wonders to your face but if you are not comfortable with this technique yet, I would say just opt to use blush. Starting out, blush can be scary too because you don't want to look like a clown, and if placed in the wrong part of your face, it can make you look sunburned. Laura Geller's baked blush and bronzer has very natural finish and you can build the pigment. Her bronzer always have some highlight mixed with it as well, sometimes she even have blush, bronzer, and highlight all in one container.
When I fell in love with make-up but was also too scared to look sunburned (because it did happen), I found Laura Geller's products at Ulta and was very impressed by it. Since the product is not super pigmented and blendable, I was able to apply my blush with minimal mistakes. It also left a nice glow to my face too, but that was before I discovered highlight. Now I pat that stuff on like my life depends on it, and that is just how I choose to live my life; live it brightly!
